Negarakuku

July 17, 2007 at 10:31 pm | Posted in Chinese, Malaysia, Music, Youtube | 24 Comments

Heard of the guy from muar that made waves by creating the a homemade music video named ‘Muar Chinese’?

His name is 黄明志, English name is NameWee. I guess that being his first name “ming zhi” pronounced same as “Name” in Chinese.

He created songs that speaks the truth so true that you or as a matter of fact, myself just cannot stop admiring him.

He has just released a new work, ‘Negarakuku’ – I love my country. His rendition of the Malaysia national anthem in RAP style can easily get listeners hooked.

Bad news though, he was told that the country is going to take legal action against him and is going to jail soon enough, although physically located in Taiwan now.

Check out his blog at http://namewee.blogspot.com It’s in Chinese, but basically there are already interviews by local Chinese reporter regarding the issues linking to his new work. On questions that his latest song being a disrespect to the national anthem, he disagrees and clarified that instead more are interested to know the lyrics and get to know how to sing it. (Although I know how to sing Negaraku since young, I guess there are still alot of ppl out there couldn’t sing it?) He also added that it is a way to promote Malaysia to the tourists as in the video consists of various landmark and tourist spots. He reckons like watching ‘Young and Dangerous’ (Hong Kong movie), people would like to visit Hong Kong, thus his video could attract more to Malaysia and experience what he showed in the video and song. I bet it is so true, they will find exactly what is shown!

Bad news aside, good news is (or rather the good in the bad news) that if convicted, he will be fined RM 100 or to serve jail for 2 weeks. Or both together.

He jokingly in a serious mode (not really sure which) said that he’s looking forward to the jail experience as he like to experience different things to spice up his life. Life is meaningless being mundane.

His previous submission to youtube has already been removed. This one below is still available, aint sure how long it can survive there. Please do enjoy it first as long as it is still available. If not, contact me. I have Muar Chinese, Kawanku, Negarakuku in 3gp! In my phone.

My sincere wish to Namewee, all the best to you and keep your cool. I bet you have many to back you and support you. Awaiting your other releases!

 Updates – 8th August 2007

Quite a number of local newspapers is publishing his story, and he might just got himself into a big trouble.

This excerpt is from today’s The Sun :

The Sun 8th August 2007

Quote : “If investigations showed the student is sponsored by the government, he would be recalled.”

Of course he’s not sponsored, he already sang it. It’s in the lyrics.

“NON-RELATED STORY”

I have a neighbour, their family problem is well-known. The whole stretch of houses or in fact, whole kampung knows about it.

They are a family of 5. Dad, mum, elder brother (age 25), younger brother (age 16) and an adopted son (age 20). The fact that the adopted son descended from another parents but “sharing” food with the family sometimes irritates the other 2 kids. The parents always pride themselves, having wonderful family others do not have, even with an adopted son.

The youngest son always got bullied by the other two, names-calling are frequent. Being called lazy, stupid, sleepy are the norms.

True enough, the adopted son is the one named the BULLY, because he bullys the younger brother. He’s the only one in the wrong.

If only they keep it to themselves, but it is now the talk of the kampung, our whole kampung, and I suspect nearby kampungs as well.

This gonna bring shame to my kampung, man.

Afterall, are they treating themselves a FAMILY or what? Who’s the main BULLY?

  5. -5 in the morning
-There’s even a morning call to wake me up
-Sometimes a few of them will sing together
-When you listen to it, it’s like a love duet
-The voice ululates like an R&B song
-Even though sometimes they sing until it’s out of tune
-Even though sometimes they even sing until their voices break
-Some sound like cockerels, but they wake up earlier than them
-This way we can know the time to get ready for class and for work

only this part irks me the most. insulting my religion. mocking my subuh azan. other than that……it shows only the reality. hope Big Brother will strip 黄明志 malaysia citizenship and blacklisted him from entering Bolehland for eternity. huhuhuhu. kalu dia masuk sure ramai mau bunuh dia. Viel Glück 黄明志.

  6. To APATHY’s comment….黄明志 is not insulting your Subuh Azan. Well, religions are well respected by everyone in this country. I believe that what he wants to express is that why Muslims prayer should be played out so “loud” (which can be heard of few kilometres away) in the wee hours in the early morning without considering other ethnics who are still sound asleep? If an Indian temple or a Chinese temple or a Sikh temple were to do this, I believe these temples would have been ripped apart by the authorities for disturbing the neighbourhood, wouldn’t I have say it right?
Isn’t he speaking the truth now? As what the government said, “Be Rational”…..but are things and happenings being rational all the time now? It doesn’t seem so…..
To all who is angry towards this Negarakuku, is what being mentioned in the songs the truth or just merely somebody’s creation to initiate a fight between religions? Think again and be rational….

  7. Author clarified in his blog:
    http://namewee.blogspot.com/2007/08/hello-semua-orang-melayu-sila-tengok.html

  8. Referring to Fairer Deal’s comment…..i agree that the song only portrays the reality here in Bolehland, however it irks me when the fella compares it to some love duet….your assumptions towards if other religion were to do the same action will face some sort of demolishing act is totally wrong. my house is near a Hindu temple. so i can hear all the bells toll during sunset (margrib) and yet none of the Muslim complaints. maybe you had bad experience during your childhood? i totally agree that in this country there are a lot of Taliban like authorities with holier than thou attitude. and i hate them so much. But that doesn’t meant that all Muslim is like that. P/S im a Chinese Muslim born fella.

  9. Its mind boggling when the Malays put up their Keris as a symbol of being a Malay, the non-malays and non-indians were intimidated and furious as saying they ( Malays) were being racists. The policies have changed. Not even the Malays were spared of their own land and kampongs now..Everything were taken from them. What Bumi Quota? What Bumi Scholarships? The Malays went to seek jobs in Non-malays but the ad said, “Chinese only needs to apply”. The non-malays and non-indians won’t bother to work with the G cos they earn minicule RM (so they said previously, not NOW!! Hahaha…) But its weird also as you are the majority who applied G soft loans and incentives..and approved!! y this was not mentioned? So juvenile thinking…please grow up!!

Even stupider when you said you cannot enter IPTA..like hellloooo? that was so 1990s? Now it doesn’t matter whether its quota or non-quota…the thing is whether you have RMRMRM? And there were also loads of IPTS…duhhhh!!! bo-ooring!!

They blame the police or other G workers for “under table angpows” where THEY were the ones who gave (they used RM and WOMEN) to “speed” and to ease things up! You blame the morning azan (which is AGAIN not factually right, its not as early as 5am!!) for interfering your blissful sleep, but some non-Malays and non-Indians appreciate this very much cos it helps them to have their morning walk/ jog/ go to school/ work/pasar. But the non-Buddhists, non-chinese NEVER complain of your yearly big smoke coming from burning the biggest colok nor the deafening and polluting fireworks, never complain of the ringing of how you pray.

So you think that the Malays are *slow* and *lazy*. I’m quite perplexed on why you instill the kiasu-ness attitude…neglect the value of *grace*. This is like insulting your own taichi movement…slowly, gracefully but powerfully? Don’t you know that even the Malays learned their martial art with grace, looked slow, but its weird that Bruce Lee lost his martial art battle to another Malay martial art form – The Silat? (performed by an Indonesian, another Malay spin off ethnic)

And don’t forget the hungry Ghost Festival where you can karaoke all night long with scantily clad gals. Do we the non-chinese bother? We tolerate your race and your religion. You even use Malay names like Pau Ahmad, burger Saudi and Malay names cafe (cafe Pak Li) / restaurants/ products (Ali Cafe/ Tongkat Ali Pawa Ruuut) to get the piece of Malay buyers. Why must you just use your own names by NOT misleading the Malays and Muslims? Why? You still need the non-chinese to make you rich and to get you *into* the G.

In Malay culture, we don’t put *fast* as the most efficient method. But we do it with tact and grace so that we value and respect other people such as Mr. Wee junior who overlook this into his *window*. With tact and respect, most Malay ministers agreed to forgive Wee Junior. Why? You guys asked for forgiveness when Datuk Hishamuddin hold his Keris in UMNO Meeting, but look here, you guys want non-chinese to forgive Mr. Wee THAT easily? How insensitive of you to think that you can mock the culture and the religion when YOU don’t want to understand how it works? (Even how funny it seemed to you..have we ever mock your pot belly, long beard, laughing God?) For me the religious issue is a non-compromise one. Particularly when Wee sang the *tudung* issue…Money is not everything to us.

I rest my case. Just don’t say other people suppress your *RIGHT* where you, yourselves denied this right from the beginning. Are you the voting community? If so, you are the one who vote the same G every 5 years… whatever happened, don’t complain much cos you are the one who didn’t do your job right. If you treat Malaysia as your home country, then join and study in Sekolah Kebangsaan or SMK, not Sekolah JENIS Kebangsaan. Do you pay your tax? Do you practice tolerance? This is just a few samples of racial undercurrent in Malaysia…Don’t simply give another BS about other races or religion…

So when you insult Negaraku, other people Religion…make fun of other people then, what difference does it make between you (the fans and supporters of Namewee) and the Jew? Issit true now that Chinese is the new Jew? I hope not!!

So before you talk/ write something on certain issue, make sure you do your homework first.

oh yeah, by the way, Fairer Deal, to quote you,”I believe these temples would have been ripped apart by the authorities for disturbing the neighbourhood, wouldn’t I have say it right?”

heh! The G has already demolishes the Muslims’ houses of prayer a LOT!! haven’t you read? Uhuhu I pity your ignorance! But they NEVER brave enough to *rip apart* temples..

Peace Malaysian! and Happy 50th Merdeka!!!
    ~Chinese + Malay + Eurasian + Arab bloodline~

  10. i know that mant many malays still don’t accept his apology…he had sparked a national tension and must be punished…if he returns and something bad happen to him in muar, then people will suspect it’s done by the malays…i suggest he never return!

  11. if i could, i wish i could live in other country (a democratic country) with no racial preferential treatment.

  12. Dont be too sentitive just think that the namewee is against the nation. In my point of view, he just tell what is happpening in malaysia. Isnt that is truth? Let’s tell me if i wrong..

The latest news who a drive who has a countless summon on hand, how he renew his license?

It is not truth that every early morning we will heard Muslim pray? Did he mention a single bad word on it? He just say it like a morning call and the voice sometimes break.. Is it wrong?

Malaysia government server is working slow.. This has been published in the newspaper before..

Is it truth that those who from chinese independent school not suppose to enter the government university as they are so many governemtn school? This is a question of the quality. Why they want to go to chinese independent school and not government school? Sure there is different between quality. Try to open their math subject book. I dare most of those who are from government school not able to solve. Another question, if student from chinese independent school isnt qualified, why the government allow to run it?

Remember, dont think it in a point of view of a chinese or non chinese.. think as a malaysian.. this song isnt against the nation or any religion.. Just depend on ur own view.. Just a hidden truth in Malaysia

  13. I completely agree with the song’s contents. Governments are nothing but a bunch of idiots. They do their work slowly, always dragging out their work when it can be done in a matter of minutes. And what’s with the work for five days only? Aren’t governments supposed to be there for the people 24 a day?! All those propanganda “untuk rakyat” are total bs. They suck our money dry. EPF(Employee Provident Fund) this EPF that. That’s our money we worked hard for!! What should we give it to the government!! Is the taxes we pay not enough?!!!

And for that doing their work with grace stuff, now that is total crap. Nothing but excuses. Darn u Taichee, comparing us to Jews! If we are Jews, we would have killed ur pathetic Malays races years ago!!! F*** U!!!!!!

  14. gsp said :
“And for that doing their work with grace stuff, now that is total crap. Nothing but excuses. Darn u Taichee, comparing us to Jews! If we are Jews, we would have killed ur pathetic Malays races years ago!!! F*** U!!!!!!”

then we would send all of you to the gas chambers before you chinese jews try to kill us Malay….

If you don like the G… just vote them out… give DAP and PKR some seats and chances to be G … in 1999 chinese voted heavily towards BN when we Malay want to kick BN out… then who should be blamed for the current chinese situation..?. the chinese themselves… as RPK said.. Chinese don’t have any telur to kick BN out… just make noises…. tunjuk sikit yang kauorang ada telur… vote BN out this time… kick MCA and Gerakan from power…. lu orang punya salah sendiri la…. lagi mau blame kitaorang…

  15. I do not agree with how he insulted Islam in his song, however, whatever else that he’s said is very true. And I absolutely do not agree that he should be stripped of his citizenship. I mean, what crime is that? Some members of the parliament have said things far worse than what he did, not only did THEY REFUSED TO APOLOGISE, they were never stripped of their titles etc, and no one criticise them for those harsh remarks or tirades. Were those politicians PUNISHED? And now, they are telling us that they are going to use ISA against a fresh graduate? No doubt I agree that he should be punished, but not THAT severe, NOT using ISA. That’s too much. He should be given a chance to redeem himself. And this also shows us that our government is very good of eschewing from the facts, they dwell and bite him on his rap on Islam and the Malays, what about the other things mentioned in his rap?

  16. pis to de weld..:)pernah x belajar sejarah?tau x peristiwa 13 may tu ape?kenape ianya terjadi?apa yang dikatakan dlm lirik itu adalah betul BUT ia agak sensitif bagi org2 tertentu..For me, its OK..I will ACCEPT it(the lyrics is true)..Come on man, kita hidup di malaysia NOT outside malaysia..Malaysia terjadi melalui persepakatan seluruh kaum(not just malay, chinese, indian and bumiputra too, REMEMBER IT!!)oleh itu, kita sebagai rakyat malaysia kena respect setiap agama, adat atau kepercayaan dalam negara ini..kalau kita hendak melarang kawan atau orang lain mencuri, kalau kita marah atau sindir, kita x boleh aspect 100% dia akan terima, cuma ada dua kemungkinan samada dia marah atau menerima..Kalau dia menerima, its ok but kalau tak menerima HOW??..Thinks about it!!..Saya faham apa yang namewee ingin sampaikan tapi cuma caranya tak sesuai, maybe lirik itu perlu digubal kepada kata bernasihat2, bukan kata sindiran..:)I think majority in this country not agree what namewee done(sorry bro)..im malay+chinese..Negara ini terdiri dari pelbagai kaum dan agama, jika kita hurting other races, maybe akan terjadi 13 may sekali lagi..Kita ini rumah sebumbung walapun berada bilik yang lain, jika penghuni bilik lain tak puas hati, maka akan terjadi pergaduhan dirumah itu, yang di mangsa adalah orang TAK BERSALAH…Tetapi ada pengajaran juga disebalik lagu ini(walaupun tak nampak),iaitu m/pelajaran SEJARAH yang diajar disekolah BUKAN untuk dihafal, difahami TETAPI perlu dihayati SUPAYA kita x melakukan perkara yang menyebabkan kita kehilangan negara kita..JANGAN SEKALI-KALI CIPTA NAMA ANDA DALAM SEJARAH MALAYSIA YANG MENYEBABKAN KAUM DI MALAYSIA BERPECAH-BELAH)One more, universiti awam sekarang tidak mengamalkan prinsip kuota, even UITM,NON-bumiputera pun boleh masuk UITM(only UITM ada kuota, saya percaya kouta itu akan dimansuhkan)..i think if namewee apply, mungkin dia akan dapat but its too late for namewee because he publish this song to public early..saya ada ramai family dan kawan2 yang x dapat masuk IPTA, but they not give up,mereka masuk IPTS..Maybe agak mahal, tetapi itu adalah pelaburan, dan saya percaya jika sesorang itu masuk IPTS dan mempunyai pointer agak bagus, they can apply for IPTA…Come on man,LIFE means survive, itu adalah perkara biasa bagi orang yang ingin berjaya dan itu adalah petanda baik untuk orang AKAN berjaya…So untuk peringatan orang lain, apabila ingin berbuat sesuatu,FIKIRLAH kebaikan dan keburukannya…PIS TO THE MALAYSIA>>>MERDEKA,we are anti 13MAY!!,malaysia is my country!!!

  17. As a Malaysian Chinese, it is my opinion that Namewee has overstepped the line when he pokes fun at religion and race. The races in Malaysia have co-existed peacefully for the last 40-odd years since the bloodbath of May 13 and it is insensitive of the songwriter to spin such satire. Yes, there’s always been the racial “issue” or undertone but this isn’t the right forum to voice such displeasure. We need to be proactive instead of reactive, constructive instead of destructive with our criticism and cynicism.

I am all for building a nation with integrity, tolerance, care for its citizens and purpose. There must be a balance between getting ahead in the world and holding on to good virtues passed down by our forefathers.

If I ruled the country, I would do the following:

    1. Draw a new constitution with the spirit of sharing the country together, not just for a select race
    2. Abolish NEP but have a plan to eradicate poverty for all races
    3. Put an end to corruption, nepotism, vice, illegal activities (including piracy of all kinds) etc. by enforcing tougher laws
    4. Focus on education and stop the brain drain – we have many talented people in the country, let’s put them to good use
    5. Focus on children & the elderly. More incentives to parents to look after their young themselves.
    6. Have a mid-term plan to reduce reliance on foreign workers
    7. Short-to-mid term plan to reduce crime rate to lowest level in the world
    8. Provide fully government-subsidised basic health cover for all citizens
    9. Focus on agriculture and aim to be a net exporter of agriculture produce
    10. Sell off Proton & Perodua – we do not need national car manufacturers unless we can compete globally

Of course, that’s just a dream and my utopia but if we don’t start thinking & doing something about it, we won’t get anywhere. Don’t allow the everyday routine eat the very soul of you until it’s too late.

  18. Why so many people attacking Namewee? did he wrote anything wrong or insulted any race or religion in his lyrics after so many translation by so many readers?? I think he is doing a great job by singing out loud of non Malay’s feeling. Those who avoid the problems doesn’t mean the problems are not exist.

I wanted to remind every Malaysian that: In 1987, a famous politician kissed the Keris and made the most extreme statement in Umno meeting by saying he wanted to bathe the keris (Malay dagger) with Chinese blood. Why nobody asks him to apologise??? why?? why?? why??

I think Namewee should wrote more of this type of songs to reflect the other side of Malaysia.. Happy 50 birthday..!!

  19. Talking cock,

Thanks for the reminder. I was indeed one of those who are not well informed about the incident.

I did some googling and managed to find were some articles about the 1987 incident in wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Najib_Tun_Razak
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Lalang
    and others:
    http://www.jeffooi.com/2006/10/ops_lalang_nst_may_harm_najib.php

I guess it is indeed the “fairness” applied right in front of our eyes.

  20. There are more extreme statements made by Malay politician if you read oposition party’s website or even google. I think firstly, we must understand why the G need to protect the Malay. The fact is Malay are weaker race compare to others, thats why the G need to have so many policies to protect them, if not, it will end up like Indonesia, the minor 5% of Chinese controlling 95% of country’s economy. Is that healthy? when all your neighbours are poor, and you are the only rich one, you will sure be robbed.. look at Kuwait.

But, if the G continue giving them fish rather teach them how to catch fish, they will soon become extinct coz they lost their survival skill. Look at Singapore, a younger country with same races, same culture but no resources, no big land and little population, from a small fishing village transformed to a develop country now. Today, they are 25 years ahead of us. Arent we feel ashame? Malay do hv great and sometime very creative ideas, Proton for example, great plan, started almost sametime as Korea Hyundai, today, they are number 6 in the world, and Proton? surviving or closing down soon?? Multi-Media Super corridor, another great plan, what happen now? i wonder if the corridor still there.. dont mention about scandal of port Klang, Malaysia Airline etc.. etc.. Anyone still have faith of Iskandar project?

Like Tun Dr M said, take away those buildings owned by G, foreigners, Chinese & Indian in KL, how many really own by Malay? Thats the result of giving them fish and not teach them how to catch fish.

If the races can leaverage each other’s strength, Malays’ creative ideas, Chinese’ and Indian’s hardworking and management skillset, we dont hv to wait till 2020 to become a develop country.

  21. this bub, is just someone who wants to voice his views about the country. under the malaysian constitution, theres a bit in the “fundamental liberties” section that clearly states “every citizen has the right to freedom of speech and expression” [source: http://www.helplinelaw.com/law/constitution/malaysia/malaysia02.php%5D. its complete bullcrap to convict this malaysian, it is unconstitutional to convict this bub just for voicing his view, he is only exercising his right to freedom of speech. heck if i had the power i’d give him a datukship rather than a jail sentence!

it seems that quite a few people think that this song was a mockery of the national anthem. i don’t see how it relates, the national anthem has been in no way distorted but has only been used as part of the song. i should think if anything, this work of his has increased the interest in our country. the nation has not been mocked, only the truths that have been kept hushed for a long time have been voiced out in a public media form. everybody knows that government workers work so and are pretty much incompetent, and we all pretty much know that its because malays are always the bubs getting positions in civil servant positions and that most malays are just not capable of quality speedy work. to hell with malays doing their work with so called “grace”, its just excuses, live with the fact that malays are useless at the moment. DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM! NOT COVER IT UP!!!! make the malays more competent, give them more rigorous training! i know for one that while malay people are quite useless as workers, they’re certainly the people you want to be with on a holiday! they certainly know how to relax! 🙂
in response to some people’s challenge to simply vote out BN:
you bubs must be among the most ignorant people in the world. haven’t you read about the demonstrations for clean elections? it’s almost impossible to vote out BN because of (but not limited to) postal votes, and unequal vote weighting.
    in response to taichee’s post:
thats was quite unfair of you to compare us chinese people to jews, chinese and jewish people are two separate races, in fact i’d take calling me a jew quite a complement. jewish people are among the richest most successful races in the world, they have the highest percentage turnout of nobel prize nominees, and are a very powerful race indeed for their small number. we chinese are a minority in this country but are the driving force of malaysia’s economy. without us this nation would be comparable to Afghanistan, run down, militant, struck with poverty, and extremist. it is chinese businesses that give everyone in this country jobs, it is chinese workers who can provide swift and quality workmanship to build and repair your home. without us this nation would certainly not survive. by stating, “Issit true now that Chinese is the new Jew? I hope not!!” you insult both the chinese, and the jewish race, pretty much the most intelligent races to bless the Earth. to put into context, china (obviously a country overrun by chinese) has been developing at breakneck speed, people are becoming richer by the year, quality of life is getting better and better. in comparison to here? have we progressed much? sure we may have a bit, but no where near as much as china has progressed, the malay and islamic infection has hindered our progress. it is you who must reform your ways, with none of those “doing it with grace” excuses. your comment is both racist, and in support of Nazism. i’ll assume that your comment was put forward without thinking, but please watch what you say. in response to “So when you insult Negaraku, other people Religion…make fun of other people”, you need to watch what you say because you have insulted the chinese ways and cultures many times in your post. for example, you have described a chinese god as being “pot belly, long beard, laughing God”. i’m not particularly religious here, but hey, doesn’t that sound a little harsh? “yearly big smoke coming from burning the biggest colok nor the deafening and polluting fireworks, never complain of the ringing of how you pray”. now thats sounds a little harsh too doesn’t it? ringing of how we pray and the deafening fireworks? heck your funny prayers coming from those booming loud speakers are pretty loud too. you need to be careful with what you say, so far you’re the biggest hypocrite among all of the comments here that i’ve read.
    AND FINALY…
“~Chinese + Malay + Eurasian + Arab bloodline~” WHAT THE HELL????? WHO THE HECK CARES ABOUT WHAT RACE YOU ARE???? to tell the truth, you’re no better than the nazi buggers the world got rid of in 1945, you seem to hate jews like mad, and are pretty damned proud of what race you are.

  22. I consider, that you are mistaken. Let’s discuss it. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.

  23. It’s remarkable to go to see this web page and reading the views of all colleagues about this piece of writing, while I am also keen of getting familiarity.

  24. Hmm it seems like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I
guess I’ll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.

I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any suggestions for rookie blog writers? I’d
    genuinely appreciate it.
